It’s a major decision for your home. Here are useful answers before you start.
Before you get started
The questions behind a better project.
Costs, timing, approvals, and the details worth asking about.
All your questions, answeredHow much will my impact-window project cost?
Opening sizes, window styles, glass specifications, access, permitting, and finish repairs all affect the total. An opening-by-opening proposal is more useful than a generic price per window. Start with your ZIP code and approximate opening count; exact measurements come later.
Are impact windows hurricane proof?
No window is indestructible. Impact-rated assemblies are tested for defined conditions. The complete system—glass, frame, anchors, and installation—must be suitable for the opening and applicable requirements. Continue to follow local storm and evacuation guidance.
Do I need permits and HOA approval?
Expect replacement work to require a review of local permit requirements. Your city or county building department determines the applicable process. Condo and HOA approvals are separate from building permits; obtain written architectural approval where required before ordering.
How long does the project take?
There are two timelines: getting ready and installing. Product selection, final measurements, approvals, permitting, and manufacturing happen before installation. Opening count, access, weather, and repairs affect installation time. Ask for a project-specific schedule before signing.
Can impact windows make my home quieter?
Laminated glass and well-sealed frames can reduce outside noise, but results depend on the complete assembly and the sound source. Compare tested STC or OITC ratings where available. No window makes a home soundproof.
Do I still need shutters?
A properly approved impact-rated opening may provide the required opening protection without a separate shutter. That does not mean every opening in a home is protected. Confirm the complete home’s protection plan and the specific product approval with your project professional.
Will I save on energy or insurance?
Modern glass packages can improve thermal performance compared with many older systems. Insurance considerations depend on your home, carrier, inspection, and policy. Neither bill savings nor premium reductions are guaranteed.
Can I replace only some of my windows?
Phasing may be possible, subject to the project’s requirements. Plan for matching finishes, future product availability, repeat permit costs, and openings that will still need storm protection. Replacing selected windows does not protect the entire home.
What should I move before installation?
Clear access to each opening, move fragile items, and plan for furniture, blinds, alarm contacts, children, and pets. Confirm who removes and reinstalls window treatments and sensors, and what protection is included for floors and nearby surfaces.
Are stucco, drywall, painting, and cleanup included?
The written scope should name each included finish repair and cleanup task. Removing old frames may reveal concealed conditions. Ask how unforeseen repairs are documented and approved, and whether painting and finish matching are included.
What warranty will I receive?
Product and labor coverage can be separate. Before ordering, request the actual written terms for the selected product and installation, including exclusions, maintenance requirements, transferability, and the process for requesting service.
Is financing available?
Ask about current options when you request an estimate. No financing provider or program is advertised here until confirmed. Rates, eligibility, payment terms, and availability must be supplied in writing by the provider.
What happens at the final inspection?
The inspector reviews the permitted work against the applicable approved documents. Keep labels and required records available until your project professional says they can be removed. A final walkthrough should also cover operation, locks, cleanup, and outstanding items.
What about sliding doors and large openings?
Panel sizes, tracks, supporting structure, drainage, and pressure requirements all matter. More glass is not simply a bigger standard window. Evaluate the complete approved door configuration and installation details for the opening.
