Know your glass

Design pressure, without the engineering lecture.

Learn what positive and negative design pressure mean and why window ratings must match the opening and approved configuration.

Wind can push. It can also pull.

Positive pressure pushes toward the inside of the building. Negative pressure pulls outward. Windows and doors need to resist the applicable loads in both directions. Ratings are commonly expressed in pounds per square foot, but one impressive number does not settle suitability.

The building sets the requirement.

Required pressures depend on factors such as building height, location, exposure, and the opening’s position. Openings near building corners can face different demands from those elsewhere. Your project professional must establish the requirements for the actual property.

The approval sets the product’s limits.

A product’s allowable pressures can vary by dimensions, glass, reinforcement, anchor conditions, and configuration. An approval table needs to be read for the exact system being installed. Do not apply the rating from a smaller sample or different configuration to your opening.

Pressure is not an impact score.

Pressure capacity and debris-impact resistance describe different aspects of performance. Ask for the required impact classification and the appropriate positive and negative pressure ratings. Water resistance and air infiltration also deserve attention; a structural rating is not a promise that no water can ever enter.

The questions to ask.

Ask who determines the opening requirements, which approval document supports the chosen configuration, and how the anchors connect to the existing wall. Those answers are more useful than choosing the largest rating on a brochure.
