Planning your project

Product approvals, permits, and the paperwork worth keeping.

Understand the different roles of Florida Product Approval, Miami-Dade NOA documents, local permits, and association approvals.

A product approval is not your project permit.

Product approval documents describe a system and its permitted configurations and installation conditions. A building permit concerns the work at your property. An association’s architectural approval addresses its own rules. These are separate steps, and one does not replace the others.

Look up the specific configuration.

Use the official Florida Product Approval system or applicable Miami-Dade documentation to check the product identification. The approval needs to support the proposed dimensions, glass, anchorage, and conditions. A logo in a brochure is not a substitute for those documents.

Confirm the authority for your address.

The building department responsible for the property determines the permitting process. Do not rely on the mailing city alone. Ask your project professional to identify the jurisdiction, required documents, permit responsibilities, inspection stages, and any separate architectural review.

Make the paperwork part of the handover.

Organize the signed scope, opening schedule, product approvals, permit information, inspection results, and warranty documents. Keep maintenance instructions too. These records can help with future service, a property sale, and questions from your insurer.

Ask before changing the specification.

A change in size, glass, frame, fastener, or installation condition can affect the approved system and permit package. Document proposed substitutions and confirm that they remain appropriate before work proceeds. For current property-specific requirements, use the responsible building department.
